Crime After Crime Lands Ike Barinholtz and Awkwafina to Star and Produce

The world of true-crime podcasts is finally getting a wacky comedy. Awkwafina (Crazy Rich Asians) and Ike Barinholtz (The Oath) have both signed on to star and produce the caper comedy Crime After Crime, according to Deadline.

The script comes from Dan Gurewitch and David Young, and centers on a millennial podcast host who agrees to help a convict, who happens to be the subject of her true-crime podcast, to prove his innocence after he escapes from jail and shows up at her house. Awkward.

The STXfilms project also boasts Nick Stoller and Conor Welch as producers via their Stoller Global Solutions banner, along with David Stassen. STX’s Kate Vorhoff and Catherine Hagedorn will oversee the film’s production on behalf of the studio.

Awkwafina’s star has been on the rise after appearing in Ocean’s 8 and the blockbuster rom-com Crazy Rich Asians. She’ll also appear in a key role in Sony’s Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle sequel as well as The Farewell, which premiered at Sundance and was picked up by studio A24 for a July release.

Barinholtz recently wrote, directed and starred in his political comedy The Oath. He’ll be seen in the upcoming Amazon comedy Late Night, alongside Emma Thompson and writer/star Mindy Kaling, which also premiered at Sundance this year. And, like the rest of Hollywood, he also has a role in Jordan Peele’s reboot of The Twilight Zone.
