Bryan Singer Out as Red Sonja Director

Bryan Singer Out as Red Sonja Director

The Hollywood Reporter brings word that director Bryan Singer is no longer attached to the Red Sonja movie that’s in-development at Millennium Films. According to the trade, Singer was dropped from the project, not because of reports of him sexually assaulting underaged boys, but because the production company couldn’t secure a distributor in the US with Singer involved.

It’s unclear if the project will move forward quickly with a new director replacement, like when Singer was fired from Bohemian Rhapsody, or if Red Sonja will return to development hell once again. Ashley Edward Miller (X-Men: First Class, Thor, Big Trouble in Little China) penned the script.

Red Sonja was created by Robert E. Howard, writer Roy Thomas, and artist Barry Windsor Smith for Marvel Comics in 1973. The Red Sonja comics are still being published today through Dynamite Entertainment. The film was put into fast-track development by Avi Lerner after the success of Warner Bros.’ Wonder Woman.

A feature film of Red Sonja was announced by Robert Rodriguez eleven years ago with Rose McGowan set to take on the titular role. Years later Simon West was attached to a version of the film with Amber Heard in talks to star. Neither version ever got off the ground.
