The film, scripted by Antonio and Paulo Campos and based on the 2011 Donald Ray Pollock novel, is set in rural southern Ohio in a town called Knockemstiff over the course of two decades and surrounding a cast of dark and bizarre characters, including a serial killing couple, a faith-testing preacher and a corrupt sheriff. The official synopsis reads as follows:

“In a place called Knockemstiff, Ohio, a forgotten backwoods of this country, where a storm of faith, violence and redemption is brewing. Out of desperation to save his dying wife, Willard Russell turns to prayer which succumbs to sacrifice. This sets protagonist Arvin, Willard’s son (Holland), on his path from bullied kid to a man who knows when to take action. “The Devil All the Time” involves a nefarious cast of characters that is told across two decades.”

In addition to the MCU veterans, the film’s cast includes Good Time‘s Robert Pattinson, Crimson Peak‘s Mia Wasikowska, Suspiria‘s Mia Goth and The Sinner‘s Tracy Letts, and is set to be produced by Randall Poster (Destroyer), Riva Marker (Wildlife) and Jake Gyllenhaal, marking his second upcoming collaboration with Netflix after the upcoming horror-thriller Velvet Buzzsaw, which will debut on February 1, and his third after having starred in the 2017 fantasy drama adventure Okja.
