Kate Winslet & Saoirse Ronan to Star in Romance Ammonite

Oscar winner Kate Winslet (Avatar 2, Blackbird) and Oscar nominee Saoirse Ronan (Mary Queen of Scots) will be starring in the romance-drama Ammonite, Deadline has confirmed. The project helms from writer/director Francis Lee (God’s Own Country).

Set in a UK coastal town in the 1820s, the drama will follow the unlikely romance between paleontologist Mary Anning and a London woman of means to whom she must unexpectedly play nursemaid.

Iain Canning (Widows) and Emile Sherman (Lion) will produce the film alongside Fodhla Cronin O’Reilly (Lady Macbeth). The feature was developed by See-Saw. Production on Ammonite is scheduled to begin next March.

Winslet won an Oscar for her performance in The Reader and has starred in many award-winning/nominated projects over the years, including Titanic, Sense and Sensibility, Iris, Little Children, Mildred Pierce, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and Steve Jobs. Her upcoming credits include Manou the Swift, Avatar 2, Naya Legend of the Golden Dolphin, Blackbird, and Moominvalley.

Ronan is a three-time Oscar nominee for her performances in Atonement, Brooklyn, and Lady Bird, for which she won the Golden Globe. She has also starred in Hannah, The Seagull, and Mary Queen of Scots. Her next project is Greta Gerwig’s drama Little Women, based on the novel by Louisa May Alcott.
