To Be Read Backwards Lands Noah Hawley as Director

Noah Hawley is set to direct the sci-fi/fantasy movie To Be Read Backwards. The Hollywood Reporter has word that Hawley will adapt author Matthew Baker’s short story for the big screen. The tale follows a man who begins his life at his death and learns about himself as he, and the world, unravel in reverse, ultimately revealing humanity and mystery.

In addition to directing, Hawley will produce the film via his 26 Keys banner with Leigh Kittay for Fox, where he has a first look deal in place.

In recent years, Hawley has carved out a name for himself for his groundbreaking TV work, both with the subversive crime drama Fargo, which is (very) loosely based on the Coen brothers’ 1995 film, and Legion, a mind-bending X-Men spinoff that follows David Haller (Dan Stevens), a powerful telekinetic who happens to be schizophrenic.

Hawley’s feature film debut, Pale Blue Dot, is set for theaters next year. The astronaut love story stars Natalie Portman (Vox Lux), Zazie Beetz (Deadpool 2), Jon Hamm (Baby Driver) as well as Legion’s own Dan Stevens.

The filmmaker is also working on Fargo’s upcoming fourth season, a 50s-set story that will star Chris Rock.
