Scott Derrickson Returning to the Director’s Chair for Doctor Strange 2!

Although Marvel’s Doctor Strange was released over two years ago, sequel talk has been kept to a minimum. Back in June, Kevin Feige revealed that a sequel was definitely in the cards, but it hadn’t been formally announced. However, that’s about to change. Via The Hollywood Reporter, the original film’s director Scott Derrickson has “quietly finalized” an agreement to helm Doctor Strange 2.

Doctor Strange 2 will feature the return of Benedict Cumberbatch as the titular Master of the Mystic arts. Most recently, Strange played a major role in last summer’s Avengers: Infinity War and is set to return to next year’s Avengers: EndgameTHR speculates that Benedict Wong and Rachel McAdams are likely to return as Wong and Christine Palmer, respectively. The original film’s ending and post-credits scene heavily implied that Chiwetel Ejiofor will also reprise his role as Karl Mordo in the next installment. Mordo felt betrayed by the nature-defying antics of Strange and the Ancient One. In response, Mordo left his old life behind and set out on a path to purge the world of sorcerers, starting with Benjamin Bratt’s Jonathan Pangborn.

THR notes that the studio is about to start looking for a writer. But since Derrickson co-wrote the first film, he’s the most logical choice to pen the film. Co-writer C. Robert Cargill is another possibility to take a pass at the script. According to MovieWeb, Cargill revealed earlier this year that he had already mapped out future installments with Derrickson and they they planned to use Nightmare as the primary villain in the sequel. “Me and Scott have not laid the groundwork for it but what I can say is that I have a feeling that whatever Nightmare is involved with, Baron Mordo, being somebody who considers himself the defender of natural law will have something to do with it,” Cargill said.
