Sister Act 3 in the Works for Disney+ Streaming Service

Disney is currently developing Sister Act 3 for its upcoming streaming service Disney+, Entertainment Weekly has confirmed. It has not yet been revealed whether Whoopi Goldberg will be returning in the third installment of the popular comedy story, and plot details are being kept under wraps.

The movie is being written by Insecure’s Regina Hicks and Star showrunner Karin Gist. Sister Act first premiered in 1992, introducing Goldberg as Deloris, a Las Vegas lounge singer who witnesses her mob boss boyfriend commit murder. Deloris is placed in a nunnery in witness protection, hiding under the identity of Sister Mary Clarence.

Maggie Smith, Kathy Najimy, Wendy Makkena, Harvey Keitel, and the late Bill Nunn also starred in the movie. The original was followed-up by a sequel, Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit, in 1993, and even inspired a Broadway musical.

The outlet notes that Goldberg had mentioned on Good Morning Britain back in September that Sister Act 3 will be going in a different direction from the originals, calling it a “brand-new rendition of Sister Act.”

Disney+ has a number of titles planned to launch on the upcoming streaming service, from live-action series like The Mandalorian to live-action remakes of classics like Lady and the Tramp. The service is expected to open for subscribers in 2019.
