Ezra Miller Offers a Brief Update on The Flash Movie

No DC Extended Universe film has had a more tumultuous pre-production phase than the upcoming Flash movie. Ezra Miller has appeared as the character in three films and has generally been well-received in the role. Unfortunately, the chance of him getting a standalone feature appears to get slimmer with every passing year. Miller remains optimistic that the film will eventually get made in spite of how things look from a distance. He said as much in a recent interview with Playboy, for which he also participated in a racy photoshoot.

“Nothing is ever certain in this world, but as certain as things get, we’re making a f***ing crazy-dope Flash movie,” said Miller. “It’s one of my great life dreams, and just the fact that we’re on the way—anyone who knows about Barry Allen knows he may arrive late, very late, but once he gets there, it’s all solved. We have to trust.”

A Flash movie set in the DCEU has been in development since at least 2015. The project has seen directors come and go (including Seth Grahame-Smith and Rick Famuyiwa) and several changes to the screenplay. At one point, the film was said to be based on the Flashpoint story arc from the comics. But perhaps because The CW series beat them to it, it’s not clear if this is still the plan. Currently, John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein are attached to direct The Flash with an eye to start production next year. The filmmakers are apparently using this time to retool the script, but Miller’s jam-packed schedule is rumored to pose an issue as well. The actor’s latest effort is Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, which opens in theaters today.
