Godzilla vs. Kong Adds Japanese Star Shun Oguri

Following the recent casting of Iron Fist‘s Jessica Henwick, Deadline reports that Japanese actor Shun Oguri has signed on to join the ensemble cast of Adam Wingard’s upcoming monster mash-up Godzilla vs Kong, the fourth installment in Legendary Entertainment’s Monsterverse. This will mark Shun’s acting debut in a Hollywood feature film.

Shun is a well-known actor in Japan who has appeared in many Japanese TV shows and movies. He gained recognition for his role as Hanazawa Rui in the 2005 teen romance drama Hana Yori Dango/Boys Over Flowers which was based on a popular manga of the same name. Shun’s film credits are Tokyo Dogs, Gokusen: The Movie and Gintama.

So far, the film consists of a monster-sized cast that includes Alexander Skarsgard (Big Little Lies), Brian Tyree Henry (Atlanta), Julian Dennison (Deadpool 2), Demián Bichir (The Nun) and Danai Gurira (The Walking DeadAvengers: Infinity War), Rebecca Hall (Vicky Cristina Barcelona), Kyle Chandler (Game Night) as Mark Russell, Ziyi Zhang (The Cloverfield Paradox) as Dr. Chen and Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things) as Madison Russell.

The 2020 film serves as both a sequel to last year’s Kong: Skull Island as well as the 2014 Godzilla and the forthcoming Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Adam Wingard, the filmmaker behind You’re Next, The Guest, and Blair Witch, will direct the film, marking just the second time that the two legendary movie monsters have appeared together in a film.

The script for Godzilla vs. Kong comes to us from a writer’s room run by Terry Rossio, who co-wrote the Pirates of the Caribbean films and also holds a story credit on 1998’s Godzilla. The room also included Star Trek Beyond writers Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne, The Kingkiller Chronicles writer Lindsey Beer, Queen of the Air writer Cat Vasko, Maze Runner and Pacific Rim Uprising writer T.S. Nowlin, and comic & television writer J. Michael Straczynski.

Godzilla vs. Kong is set to arrive in theaters on May 22, 2020.
