We’re due for a new Muppets movie, are we not? I mean, it feels like it’s been quite a while since 2014’s Muppets Most Wanted, and we won’t talk about the failed attempt to bring them back to television in 2015. It’s impossible to resist the charm and the wit of the Muppets, especially when there are some genuinely funny people there to accompany them on their adventures.
Through the years, the Muppets have travelled across the planet, celebrated all kinds of holidays, and put their own spin on plenty of classic film genres and tropes. Considering Jason Segel’s heartfelt film Forgetting Sarah Marshall concluded with a Dracula puppet musical, it only made sense when he announced he’d be writing and starring in a revival of the series in the early 2010s. When the movie finally came out, it was clear he was the best man to bring them back. The Muppets is a fantastic and clever addition to the series, managing to cement itself as the best the Muppets have to offer.

The Muppet Movie
The only thing that even comes close to Jason Segel’s film is the original itself. Released in 1979, the film follows the Muppets as they head to Hollywood in an attempt to make it big. It’s funny and sweet and classic.

The Muppet Christmas Carol
To be honest, it wouldn’t be surprising to find out that many kids grew up thinking this version of A Christmas Carol was the only version of A Christmas Carol (well, this one or the Mickey version). It’s a heartwarming and original take on Dickens’s Christmas classic, made all the better by a great performance by Michael Caine.

The Muppets Take Manhattan
Their first movie saw them heading to Los Angeles, their second film sent them to London, so it only makes sense for their third film to send the Muppets to the Big Apple. The film follows the gang as they attempt to put on a memorable stage show, but—in typical Muppets fashion—nothing ever goes as planned.

Muppets Most Wanted
A direct sequel to The Muppets (but actually the seventh sequel to their original motion picture, as pointed out by Beaker early on in the film), Muppets Most Wanted hits all the right beats you’d expect from a Muppets feature film. It’s got a great cast of comedians—Ty Burrell, Tina Fey, and Ricky Gervais, to name a few—and some great songs, too.

Muppets from Space
Oddly enough, Muppets from Space isn’t a musical. It’s the only Muppets movie to not be a musical, as a matter of fact. The first one to be released after the death of creator Jim Henson, as well. It’s a sweet film about finding a place in the world, but there’s no denying that some original songs would’ve probably boosted the film to a whole new level.

The Great Muppet Caper
The second Muppets film has a lot going for it: great cameos, great sets, and scenery, great songs. Everything you might want from a Muppets movie. It’s got a strange setup, and that’s about the only thing that keeps this film from being better.

Muppet Treasure Island
Another riff on a classic story, Muppet Treasure Island is a great sendup of the original while also managing to maintain nice visuals and deliver some excellent jokes. Its close proximity to The Muppet Christmas Carol is probably the only thing that kept it from being more well-received.

The Muppets’ Wizard of Oz
The last feature-length Muppets movie to arrive before Segel’s revival, The Muppets’ Wizard of Oz is fun enough to keep your attention for a couple of hours. It’s obvious that nothing could come close to the iconic status of The Wizard of Oz, so maybe it was a mistake to try and do a spoof of it, but the movie is exactly as entertaining as you’d expect.

A Muppet Family Christmas
While it’s barely an hour long, A Muppet Family Christmas is a sweet and endearing look at the way the Muppets celebrate Christmas. It’s not a spoof of anything, and it’s not based on anything either. It’s just a cute and enjoyable Christmas special in its own right.
