In Incredibles 2, Helen (voice of Holly Hunter) is called on to lead a campaign to bring Supers back, while Bob (voice of Craig T. Nelson) navigates the day-to-day heroics of “normal” life at home with Violet (voice of Sarah Vowell), Dash (voice of Huck Milner) and baby Jack-Jack—whose super powers are about to be discovered. Their mission is derailed, however, when a new villain emerges with a brilliant and dangerous plot that threatens everything. But the Parrs don’t shy away from a challenge, especially with Frozone (voice of Samuel L. Jackson) by their side. That’s what makes this family so Incredible.

The voice cast also includes Brad Bird, Bob Odenkirk, Catherine Keener, Jonathan Banks, Sophia Bush, and Isabella Rossellini.

Written and directed by Brad Bird (Iron Giant, The Incredibles, Ratatouille) and produced by John Walker (The Incredibles, Tomorrowland) and Nicole Grindle (Sanjay’s Super Team short, Toy Story 3 associate producer), Disney•Pixar’s Incredibles 2 busts into theaters on June 15, 2018.

The First 22 Minutes

Note: The filmmakers told us that the first few minutes of the film is actually animated more in the 2004 style of the first Incredibles, and it isn’t until a few minutes into the Underminer action scene that the animation quality subtly shifts into the far more realistically-rendered (but still identifiably Incredibles) characters and environments Pixar is capable of in 2018. They did this so fans could literally watch the second movie right after the first and it would be seamless, especially given that the sequel takes place MOMENTS AFTER the first ends.

The movie starts with Rick Dicker (Jonathan Banks, replacing the late Bud Luckey) interrogating Tony, Violet’s crush from the first film, about what exactly it is that he saw in the aftermath of the Underminer battle. We flash back to the moment from the track in the first movie where Violet and Tony plan a date, then shift over to The Underminer having emerged in the parking lot, and Elastigirl leaves Violet in charge of watching Jack Jack while she and Bob go off to save the day. She angrily throws off her mask, and at that exact moment Tony sees her in her super suit and is shocked. Cut back to Dicker in the interrogation room using a Men in Black-esque laser to erase Tony’s memory.

We cut back to the Underminer battle, where the villain has used his super drill to destabilize a few major city buildings, including a bank vault. He uses a big vacuum tube to suck all the cash out of the bank vault, and when Mr. Incredible arrives winds up sucking him in as well. The drill goes underground and they fight briefly, then the drill starts barreling through the city causing massive destruction, including knocking down a bridge with Elastigirl saving the civilians. The drill is about to knock down a monorail full of people when Frozone saves it by creating an ice bridge. Dash saves an old lady from a falling car, and as both Violet and Dash get involved, the responsibility of taking care of Jack Jack keeps getting passed around from one family member to the next. Mr. Incredible attempts to stop the drill by putting his whole body weight against one of the gigantic vehicle’s treads, and gets run over a few times in the process in a very cartoony moment.

Watching all this from the sidelines is a suited character named Winston Deavor (Bob Odenkirk), who is excited the supers are out in the open again, and tells his driver to follow Frozone. The driver catches Frozone/Lucius Best in an alley, now changed into his civilian clothes to avoid being captured by cops, and the driver asks the hero if he wants to change that law. Meanwhile the family works together and stops the drill from bulldozing city hall at the last moment, but they get captured by the police and taken away in handcuffs. At the police station, the angry cops tell the family it would have been better if they did nothing.

Rick Dicker drives the family back to their current lodging, the Safari Court motel, since they are still without a permanent home after their house was destroyed at the end of the first movie. Dicker tells Bob and Helen that the superhero protection program is shutting down and he can’t afford to move them or protect them anymore. We then see a scene of them inside the very cramped motel room eating Chinese take out for dinner. Helen tells the kids they can’t use their powers anymore, and the kids talk about how much better things were on the island in the last movie when they were free to use their abilities. The kids want to fight bad guys, but Helen puts her foot down and says the law is the law. We cut to an intimate scene of Bob and Helen talking by the motel pool at night. They discuss how they’re going to be homeless soon if one of them doesn’t get a job, and just then Frozone shows up and tells them about Winston Deavor, and that he wants to see them in their suits, specifically their old suits since Winston is apparently very nostalgic.

Bob and Helen leave the kids at the motel and take a trip to DevTech, the big corporate office of Winston and his sister Evelyn Deavor, who wears clothes inspired by a more tomboyish look ala Laurie Anderson, Diane Keaton, etc. “I love superheroes, Winston declares, singing Mr. Incredible and Frozone’s old theme song to them, with the guys singing along. We learn that Winston and Evelyn’s father was a major champion and sponsor of superheroes in the old days, and used to have a direct line to Gazerbeam, but shortly after supers were outlawed, he was killed by burglars robbing his house, with no one to call on for help. Winston wants to bring back the glory days of the supers and change the public perception of them by installing cameras in their supersuits so they can actually record all the good deeds they do. Winston and Evelyn also have lots of connections, can get insurance for them, etc. Winston decides that Elastigirl will be the first hero to fully reemerge, since her track record has the least collateral damage. Mr. Incredible is a little taken aback by this slight, but Elastigirl is game. Later on, Bob and Helen talk over the idea in bed. Helen says, “It’s crazy! To help my family I have to leave it. To help the law I have to break it.”

The New House

Note: This scene also has an interesting backstory in that the original design for the Parr’s new house given to them by DevTech was a bit more modest (though still luxurious), but after developing the design and blocking the action in this house for eight months, Brad Bird decided he wanted to consolidate three scenes into this one location and needed a bigger house, so they had to design and build a new one in the computer from scratch in just two weeks. They did wind up cannibalizing a lot of the furniture and blocking from the old house design, and reused that house as Tony’s house later in the picture.

In the scene we saw introducing the house, the family is driven to a glorious mansion on a hillside, with huge windows and a triangle shape. Once they are inside there is a huge TV, a waterfall, etc. The house is so lavish that Helen asks if this is all a bit much. “Would you rather be in the hotel?” Bob asks. Dash finds a remote control and the floor opens up to reveal a beautiful set of couches and more pools of water in the floor, but he presses too many buttons and the couches wind up sinking into the water pools and he freaks out.

Elasticycle Action Sequence

This is by far the coolest scene we saw, and it involves the introduction of the Elasticycle, the new vehicle Helen uses for her first mission: Guarding the maiden voyage of a new mag lev train. The mayor cuts the ribbon on the futuristic train, while Helen watches from a bridge across the street on her bike. Predictably things go awry, and instead of going forward, the train goes backwards, and Helen goes after it on her bike. The coolest thing about this bike is, at the flip of a switch, it can separate at the middle into two halves, one wheel on each, so Helen can stretch. This allows for some very cool moments as she leaps through and over buildings on the bike.

Some cops in squad cars are unable to keep up with the train, but the cops watch as Elastigirl goes after it. In one incredible “stunt” moment, she drives the bike up a large construction crane, onto the side of a building and down onto the top of the train itself! Once on the train she has to split as it goes through a tunnel, with one wheel on each side of the tunnel and her waist stretched over the top of the train. When the train is about to enter another tunnel with too low a clearance she abandons the bike, which explodes when it hits the tunnel entrance. Helen goes to the front of the train and sees the driver is hypnotized. She can’t get inside the car, so she separates the front car from the rest of the train, then uses her parachute ability to stop the front car from derailing at the last minute.

Jack Jack Racoon Fight

While the Elasticycle scene may have been the coolest, this scene involving Jack Jack fighting a raccoon is the funniest sequence. When Bob is asleep on the couch, baby Jack Jack spots through the glass backdoors a raccoon going through their trash in the backyard. Jack Jack gets outside using a new power, then engages in a battle with the rodent. Jack Jack uses some of his new powers that we’re not allowed to discuss, but the scene is a great introduction to the baby’s abilities, and despite the fact that it literally destroys their backyard, Bob sees all this and is thrilled. “You have powers!” he exclaims. Then he realizes just how much work he has cut out for himself in taking care of this kid!
