Danai Gurira on Okoye’s Reaction to The Avengers in Infinity War

The conclusion of Marvel’s Black Panther saw a major shift in the world of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Instead of sticking to themselves and attempting to shun all outsiders, the nation of Wakanda made itself known to the world. They’re now a presence that is on the international stage and everyone knows how they can help. Naturally, when the baddest alien invaders that have ever come to Earth put it in their sights, there’s only once place for The Avengers to go.

“The vocation of being a Dora is you’re learning how to be one from quite a young age, so her entire vocation has been to maintain this nation,” actress Danai Gurira tells us on the set of Avengers: Infinity War. “There’s another major threat they go through in the movie you will have seen by the time this comes out, but this is one of the biggest threats they’ve dealt with. “

While visiting the set of the upcoming film, we saw Earth’s Mightiest Heroes making their arrival in Wakanda and preparing for the fight of their lives. Though King T’Challa, aka The Black Panther, made the decision to let them enter, Gurira’s Okoye remains skeptical.

“She hasn’t been excited about outsiders. You’ll see that in a very clear way in the movie.”

The leader of T’Challa’s Dora Milaje, Okoye prefers to stay in her home, even though she previously went to South Korea in pursuit of Ulysses Klaue. With an intergalactic attack coming though, would she head off into space if it was required of her?

“Well, the fight’s coming to them, but she’s the type of person who will go where she needs to go, especially considering the fact that she’s also very deeply connected to what her king decides. She’s led by her king… she definitely lets him know her thoughts, but she goes by his decisions.”

They’ll at least have some help in the fight that’s coming to them with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. Even though they might be the title heroes of the film, Okoye is still cautious about their arrival.

“She’s always thinking about how many things can go wrong and how much she can control what could go wrong before it goes wrong, but there’s not a lot of control that she can have over something that’s coming that’s this massive. But that’s where her caution is.”

One person who was already in Wakanda is Sebastian Stan’s Bucky, now with a freshly-decorated new arm. He might be The Winter Soldier to the world, but he doesn’t scare Okoye.

“He’s one guy, so he’s manageable. She’s thought it through. She knows how to disarm that arm.”

Avengers: Infinity War arrives in theaters on April 27.
