Miles Teller Movies and TV Spotlight

Ten Miles Teller movies and TV shows to check out

2014 was a banner year for Miles Teller, who had a starring role in Whiplash, one of the most critically-acclaimed movies of the year. Also in 2014, Teller had a supporting part in Divergent, a YA adaptation that has already become a big box office franchise. After years of mostly supporting parts, Teller is finally in a position where he can headline a movie. Teller has also demonstrated that he can do both comedy and drama, but that’s not always enough to become a real Hollywood star.

While 2015 started out great for Teller with a strong showing at the box office for The Divergent Series: Insurgent, the year went downhill for him in August when Fantastic Four earned just $167.9 million at the worldwide box office. Thing are looking up again in 2016 for the actor, however, with The Divergent Series: Allegiant opening in theaters on March 18. Just a week later, he’s got Get a Job opening, a comedy in which he co-stars with Anna Kendrick.

ComingSoon.net’s Miles Teller Movies Spotlight is shining on the ten most pivotal roles of Teller’s career to date.

Miles Teller Television Series: The Unusuals (2009)

Although Teller’s earliest roles came in short films, his first major part came in the second episode of ABC’s short-lived series, The Unusuals. Teller played James Boorland, a 16-year-old member of a family of criminals who went on a crime spree to save one of their own. Not pictured above is the cop interrogating Teller’s character: Detective Jason Walsh as played by Jeremy Renner, who went on to portray Hawkeye in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Multiple Marvel movie connections are now inevitable in Hollywood.

Miles Teller Movies: Rabbit Hole (2010)

Nicole Kidman reportedly hand-picked Teller for his role in Rabbit Hole as Jason, the teenage driver of the car that struck and killed the son of Kidman’s character, Becca Corbett. The film was an adaptation of David Lindsay-Abaire’s play about a couple dealing with their grief and their troubled marriage.

Becca’s relationship with Jason was expanded for the adaptation as they formed an emotional bond of sorts. Within the film, Jason gave Becca a comic book that he created which dealt with parallel worlds, and she praised it. Of course, the name of the comic was “Rabbit Hole.”

Miles Teller Movies: Footloose (2011)

Teller’s next big movie role came in the remake of Footloose by director Craig Brewer. As with the original Footloose from 1984, the remake follows a teenager from the city who moves to a town that has banned dancing.

But Miles Teller was not that rebellious cityfolk teenager! Instead, he was Willard Hewitt, the best friend of said teenager, Ren McCormack (Kenny Wormald). Nearly four years later, Wormaid would probably be cast as Teller’s sidekick if they ever make another movie together.

Although it should be noted that Willard was in the first Footloose, and Teller had previously portrayed him in a stage production of the story.

Miles Teller Movies: 21 & Over (2013)

By 2013, Teller’s star was on the rise. Teller landed one of the three leading roles in 21 & Over alongside Skylar Astin and Justin Chon. 21 & Over was also the directorial debut of The Hangover screenwriters, Jon Lucas and Scott Moore.

Unfortunately, 21 & Over also plays like a ripoff of The Hangover, with the same brand of comedy and a similar premise. Basically, Casey (Astin) and Miller (Teller) get so wasted that they forget where their even more intoxicated friend, Jeff (Chon) lives on the night before his interview to get into medical school.

But the film made $48 million at the box office against a $13 million budget. Whatever else this film is, it’s not a flop.

Miles Teller Movies: The Spectacular Now (2013)

With The Spectacular Now, Teller had his first shot as a leading man in Hollywood. Starring opposite YA superstar, Shailene Woodley, Teller appeared as Sutter Keely, a high school student falling into alcoholism while ruining his budding romance with Woodley’s Aimee Finecky.

The Spectacular Now only received a limited release, so it didn’t light up the box office, but it is a huge milestone in Teller’s career.

Miles Teller Movies: That Awkward Moment (2014)

The real awkward moment is when you’ve made a movie that’s not very good. The most significant thing about That Awkward Moment is that Teller had a leading role opposite Michael B. Jordan, his future Fantastic Four co-star.

This film was only a modest success, but it kicked off Teller’s biggest year in Hollywood.

Miles Teller Movies: Divergent (2014)

In Divergent, Teller was reunited with Shailene Woodley. Except this time, she was clearly the star of the movie as “Tris” Prior, a “Divergent” in a dystopian future who didn’t neatly fit in with society’s oppressive faction system. She also developed special abilities that can best be described as “super powers.”

Nor was Teller’s character Woodley’s romantic partner in this film. Instead, his character, Peter Hayes was Tris’ hated rival.

Miles Teller Movies: Whiplash (2014)

Teller’s banner year came to a head in Whiplash, the Oscar-nominated and critically-acclaimed story of the complex and aggressive relationship between a Jazz student, Andrew Neiman (Teller), and his instructor, Terence Fletcher (J. K. Simmons). To keep the comic connection going, it should be pointed out that Simmons was J. Jonah Jameson in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy.

Simmons went on to win the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Whiplash, but Teller also received praise and he continues to reap the benefits of Whiplash as well.

Miles Teller Movies: The Divergent Series: Insurgent (2015)

Teller returned for The Divergent Series: Insurgent in 2015. And his character, Peter was still at odds with Tris (Shailene Woodley) for most of the movie.

But there were certain developments in the plot that ensured that Teller will be back for the next film in the franchise.

Miles Teller Movies: Bleed for This (2016)

While Michael B. Jordan already got into the ring for Creed, Teller has his own boxing drama coming up soon. Teller is playing real-life former World Champion Boxer Vinny Pazienza in Bleed for This.

Ben Younger wrote and directed the film, which also stars Katey Sagal, Amanda Clayton and Aaron Eckhart. Bleed for This is likely to be released later this year, and it could even be an Oscar contender. It’s also likely that Bleed for This will only get a limited release, which limits its chances to catch on with a wider audience. But if a film like Whiplash can defy the odds, then perhaps this one can too.
