CS Video: The Cast of Neill Blomkamp’s Chappie

What the future might look like is a regular staple of science fiction and has been as long as the genre has been a popular creative outlet for writers and filmmakers.

Neill Blomkamp’s third feature film, Chappie, explores one possible near future where crime has run rampant over South Africa and the government has implemented robot police forces to quell it. The robots are designed and built by the company Tetra Vaal, but they’re constantly trying to improve their efficiency, which falls to two very different-minded engineers. Dev Patel’s Deon Wilson is trying to create a sentient version of the company’s robots, while the military man Vincent Moore (Hugh Jackman) is pushing for a tank-like weaponized robot dubbed “Moose” that would be controlled by a human pilot.

Before the head of the company Michelle Bradley (Sigourney Weaver) can decide which plan to go with, Deon is kidnapped and his experimental robot is absconded by a group of criminals (played by South African rappers Die Antwoord) who want to use the robot nicknamed “Chappie” to help them perpetrate crimes.

Chappie is portrayed by Blomkamp’s long-time collaborator Sharlto Copley, and it’s a very different movie than some might be expected, owing as much to E.T. the Extraterrestrial as it does RoboCop with Die Antwoord bringing a very different feel to the movie in their key roles.

ComingSoon.net had a chance to sit down with Copley, Jackman and Weaver to talk to them about their roles in the film, the highlights of which you can watch in the video player below.

Chappie opens in regular and IMAX theaters on Friday, March 6 with previews on Thursday night. You can also check out our interview with Neill Blomkamp right here.
