The Star Wars News Roundup – 5.16.14

The purpose of this roundup is to put the highlights of all things Star Wars from the last week in one location. If you read this each week, you should be able to converse fluently with any Star Wars fan on everything from the latest Star Wars: Episode VII developments to the latest toys. And maybe you’ll even share with them something that they might have missed.

Let’s get to it!

Episode VII and Spinoff News and Rumors

Today marks the first day of principal photography for “Episode VII” in Abu Dhabi. Check out the tweets from Bad Robot and Lucasfilm!

The National previously said that filming had started on May 13 in the Abu Dhabi desert.

Things seem to be picking up pace around the Star Wars sets in the Abu Dhabi desert, with shooting expected to start on Tuesday and last until at least the end of the month.

Curious day-trippers are likely to be disappointed, however, as our sources report that police and army are checking all vehicles in the area and making sure that anyone who isn’t supposed to be there is sent quickly on their way.

Our sources also report that the sets are getting closer to completion, with a “whole world” having been built on an otherworldly salt lake at one location, a “shuttle-like” spacecraft, a large tower, a “big, centuries-old-looking market”, something the crew are reportedly referring to as the “alien house” and 10 to 15 “really fast buggies” powered by jet engines (landspeeders of Tatooine fame from the previous films, perhaps?)

We have also been told that two lorries of explosives have been brought to one of the sites under high security and that a blast crater has been created. So, it looks like the action in Abu Dhabi could be set to feature a major battle or spacecraft crash of some description.

Yahoo Movies UK – Oscar Isaac Talks Star Wars 7 Casting

In an interview with The Sunday Times’ Culture section on sale tomorrow (11 May) Isaac said: “I could not be more excited to be a part of the ‘Star Wars’ saga.”

Isaac is one of many exciting rising stars joining J.J. Abrams’ sci-fi sequel, alongside John Boyega, Domhnall Gleeson, Adam Driver and unknown Daisy Ridley.

“It still seems hard to believe,” Isaac continued. “‘Star Wars’ is a huge part of my family. Collecting toys, throwing themed parties. We had a big one for ‘Return of the Jedi’. I came as a gonk droid.”

The Courier – New Star Wars films ‘would have bored me’, says Scots actor Denis Lawson

Hollywood actor Denis Lawson has turned down the chance to appear in the new Star Wars films because they would have “bored him”.

The Crieff-born star said he had been approached by Disney, which bought Lucasfilm in 2012, but turned them down.

The 66-year-old played X-wing pilot Wedge Antilles in all three films of the original trilogy. In 2001, he provided the voiceover for the character’s appearance in a Nintendo computer game.

Lawson made the revelation at a screening of his most recent film, The Machine, at Strathearn Artspace in his home town.

When asked if the next new Denis Lawson film to be screened there would be Star Wars, he replied: “I’m not going to do that.”

Asked if it was because Disney had taken over the franchise, he replied: “They asked me but it just would have bored me.”

Empire Online – Dave Filoni Talks “Star Wars Rebels”

Will Darth Vader and Palpatine appear at all?

I can’t say specifically. All I can say is that this time period, between episodes III and IV, is a dominant time period for the Emperor – and Darth Vader, for that matter. They control the galaxy through fear and our Rebels are insignificant to them. But it is to their own undoing that they don’t recognize the spirit of individuals and what that spirit could add up to in the fight against the Empire.

So there’s a presence of power, of physical fear and power, which the Empire represents. You know I always think about the Emperor because in A New Hope they talked about the Emperor but you never saw him. And then in Empire you got a glimpse of him in a hologram but you didn’t really know who he was, so finally when he reveals himself I almost thought as a kid, ‘Wow, he’s just an old guy with a cane!’ I remember that when he confronts Luke Skywalker he doesn’t actually use his cane anymore and walks across, and you realise that he’s very manipulative and very evil and he’s the master string puller, web weaver.

That’s the Emperor that I want to have, and Simon and Greg do also, in Rebels. We want to have an Emperor that’s behind the scenes and so lofty in his power that it would take a lot to bring that spider out and down into the web that he’s woven. Our Rebels are little flies and they hit the web string and it plucks it, so first you get a certain level of Imperial officer after you. Then if you cause a bigger vibration then you get a bigger level; maybe an Inquisitor shows up. You’ve got to really start to undo the web before you get to Vader and ultimately the Emperor, and, you know, good luck to our guys if they draw that kind of attention.
