Who Should Play Live-Action Zatanna?
Though having made a name for herself in her home country of Cuba as a teenage star, Ana de Armas first found her rise to stardom in America with 2017’s Blade Runner 2049 and most recently with the lead role in Rian Johnson’s smash hit ensemble whodunnit Knives Out and is now one of the most in-demand actresses in Hollywood. Eiza González broke out for American audiences with a starring role in Robert Rodriguez’s small-screen adaptation of his 1996 horror comedy film From Dusk Till Dawn, taking over the role of Santanico Pandemonium from Salma Hayek, and has gone on to land roles in major titles including Baby Driver, Hobbs & Shaw and Bloodshot. After starring in the British soap Hollyoaks for nearly five years, Nathalie Emmanuel made her leap overseas with a major role in HBO’s Game of Thrones followed by becoming a key player in Universal’s Fast & Furious franchise with her debut in Furious 7 and the Maze Runner franchise. Camila Mendes became a breakout star of The CW’s Riverdale, her acting debut, and since has landed roles in acclaimed indie drama Coyote Lake and sci-fi rom-com Palm Springs alongside Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti. After featuring in supporting roles across film and television for nearly a decade, Tatiana Maslany found fame with her Emmy and Golden Globe-nominated role in BBC’s acclaimed sci-fi thriller series Orphan Black and has since landed major roles in the Boston bombing biopic Stronger, neo-noire crime thriller Destroyer and HBO’s well-received Perry Mason revival.

Created by Gardner Fox and Murphy Anderson, Zatanna Zatara made her first appearance in the Hawkman comic books in November 1964. She is the daughter of a famous stage magician named Giovanni Zatara, who have debuted during the Golden Age of Comics. Naturally, Zatanna inherited his father’s magical powers and career as a professional stage magician. Some of her cool powers are the ability to control the elements, telekinesis, telepathy, teleportation, and manipulation of reality.
Even though she hasn’t yet made her live-action film debut, she had first made her live-action appearance in popular DC series Smallville and was portrayed by Serinda Swan. However, DC fans got more familiar with her through her appearances in various animated series such as Batman: The Animated Series, Batman Beyond, Justice League Unlimited, and Young Justice as well as in most recent TV shows DC Super Hero Girls and Harley Quinn.
If the solo Zatanna movie would later be confirmed by Warner Bros., it would officially become a part of the studio’s growing list of ongoing live-action projects including James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, Matt Reeves’ The Batman, Andy Muschietti’s The Flash, Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam, Ava DuVernay’s New Gods and more.
