POLL RESULTS: Who Should Be the Next Avengers? (SPOILERS)

With Avengers: Endgame in wide release and destroying all kinds of box office records, ComingSoon.net asked its readers about what past and future Marvel Studios characters they think should make up the next phase of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes as a team whenever Avengers 5 rolls around, presumably at the end of Phase 4. We let folks vote for as many characters as they wanted, which resulted in 8813 voters casting 88616 total votes! Check out the heroes they picked to be the next Avengers below and SPOILERS BEWARE!!!

As far as the original core members of the Avengers team are concerned, Iron Man, Black Widow and Steve Rogers are no-go’s after the events of Endgame. Hulk and Thor still appear to be kicking it, and while Hawkeye seems to be retired and spending time with the fam you never know, especially now that he may be getting his own series on Disney+.

TOP 10 (YOUR Next Avengers)

CS readers chose (in order of votes received) Doctor Strange, Spider-Man, Ant-Man, Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Captain America (Sam Wilson), Scarlet Witch, Hulk, Thor and The Wasp. That’s a pretty formidable team, and not surprisingly full of characters audiences have grown quite familiar with over several movies each. Doctor Strange earned the most with 7140 votes out of 8813 voters, meaning almost everyone who participated in the poll gave Stephen Strange the thumbs up to likely lead the next wave of Avengers. In Endgame Strange evolved from a Bleecker Street wizard weirdo almost none of the characters were aware of to the literal lynchpin of the entire MCU, gathering (with help from Wong) nearly every major character that had ever appeared in these movies to defeat Thanos. While Captain Marvel might be a more obvious leader for Phase 4, she’s still emerging as a character. In other words, now that Iron Man and Steve Rogers are gone it’s Strange’s time to shine.

BOTTOM 5 (DEFINITELY NOT YOUR Next Avengers)

The five Marvel characters that received the least votes from CS readers were Iron Fist, Red Hulk (Thunderbolt Ross), Howard the Duck, Sersi and Ikaris. Those last two are from The Eternals, a film in development that will likely play a huge part in Phase 4 but has very little visibility right now… kinda like Guardians of the Galaxy before 2014. Angelina Jolie will be playing Sersi, FYI. Danny Rand (a.k.a. Iron Fist) already got two seasons his own Netflix series and was considered the least-liked character in The Defenders. Howard the Duck was the first Marvel character to get his own major movie in 1986, the notorious eponymous bomb produced by George Lucas, but has since had three appearances in the MCU proper (voiced by Seth Green) in both Guardians movies and a brief blink-and-you’ll-miss-it cameo in Endgame. Thunderbolt Ross has had three onscreen appearances in the MCU in Incredible Hulk, Civil War and Infinity War, but has yet to turn into the Red Hulk (a beloved character in the comics). It’s a near-certainty that we’ll see Howard the Duck again in Guardians Vol. 3, but an Avenger? Maybe not. As for the rest? We’ll have to see what Marvel Studios has in store for them.

Endgame is the follow-up to last year’s Avengers: Infinity War, which saw the titular superhero team take the fight to Thanos in order to stop his attempt at exterminating half of the universe’s population with the Infinity Stones. But it was to no avail, as he was able to successfully collect them all and snap his fingers, wiping out half of all life from existence in a cloud of ash. The grave course of events set in motion by Thanos that wiped out half the universe and fractured the Avengers ranks compels the remaining Avengers to take one final stand in Marvel Studios’ grand conclusion to twenty-two films.

Avengers: Endgame stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, Don Cheadle, Sean Gunn, Paul Rudd, Brie Larson, Karen Gillan and Josh Brolin as Thanos.

The epic, three-hour final showdown between Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and the Mad Titan himself is in theaters now.
