The Atypical Family: Jang Ki-Yong & Chun Woo-Hee on Filming Romantic Scenes

JTBC’s upcoming K-drama The Atypical Family featuring Jang Ki-Yong and Chun Woo-Hee is one of the most anticipated dramas. The teaser videos and still-cuts from the drama have already created quite a buzz. Ki-Yong plays Bok Gwi-Joo, the male lead in the series, while Woo-Hee portrays Do Da-Hae, the female lead.

The storyline revolves around a family who possesses superpowers of sorts. But with modern-day problems and mental health issues, the family members are losing their powers slowly. However, a mysterious woman, Do Da-Hae, might be the key for them to get back the powers. How? Well, for that, the viewers have to watch the drama. In a recent interview, Ki-Yong and Woo-Hee share their experience about filming this drama.

The Atypical Family cast on filming intimate scenes

The Atypical Family is Jang Ki-Yong’s comeback since his military discharge. Talking about filming the romantic scenes with Chun Woo-Hee, he shared his experience. After shooting the pictorial for Elle Korea, he said, “Rather than words, I tend to be the type to express with actions. That’s why I’m shy when it comes to expressing affection, and this is definitely a difficult aspect when acting. Overcoming that is my assignment.”

However, when Chun Woo-Hee was asked the same thing, she explained, “I believe romance acting should both satisfy [viewers’] fantasy and be realistic. I don’t tend to agree that normally having lots of experience helps with acting, but I think for romance, you need to have experience. For certain, you need to have a lot of emotions.”

While sharing what is different in The Atypical Family than other supernatural dramas, the actress said, “I think in our drama, supernatural powers aren’t ‘fantasy’ but ‘metaphors.’ The setup of a supernatural family that has lost their supernaturals—couldn’t this be a story about the potential power that everyone has?  I hope this delivers comfort and healing vibes to those who aren’t able to perform to their full capabilities in modern society.”

The Atypical Family will premiere on May 4, 2024, at 10:30 p.m. KST on JTBC and Netflix.
