Kim Ji-Won’s My Liberation Notes Ending Explained: Does It Have a Happy or a Sad Ending?

2022’s K-drama, My Liberation Notes is one of those dramas that received a lot of appreciation and love. JTBC‘s drama featuring Kim Ji-Won and Son Suk-Ku in the lead, left the audience with an open ending.

The storyline revolves around three siblings who live in the countryside but go to Seoul every day for work. While they all are quite unhappy with their own lives, they have to work out their struggles, personality traits, and more. This drama talks about more of the journey than the destination. There’s also another character named Mr. Gu who moves in the neighborhood of Yeom siblings. He is a drunkard and looks like someone who has secrets to keep. While everyone gossips about him, Mi-Jeong decides to approach him.

So, what happened by the end of the drama? Did the siblings get to live a good life? Does Kim Ji-Won’s character Yeom Mi-Jeong get a happily ever after with Mr. Gu (Son Suk-Ku)? Scroll ahead to know how the drama ended.

My Liberation Notes ending: What happens at the end?

It seems the makers wanted to end the drama on a positive note which is why the Yeom siblings got their liberation. Lee Min-Ki who plays Yeom Chang-Hee, is one of the brothers who used to be frustrated with himself for years. Chang-Hee wanted to do something in Seoul and earn lots of money, resigned from his job to work at a convenience store. Finally, he starts accepting his fate while believing and loving himself back. On the other hand, Yeom Gi-Jeong (played by Lee El) begins to understand reality and accept that everyone deals with different problems in life. He becomes close to Jo Tae-Hoon (Lee Ki-Woo) after all the hardships.

While the brothers find their peace, Yeom Mi-Jeong (Kim Ji-Won) is seen smiling brightly. On the other hand, Mr. Gu thought he could never let go of his alcoholism because of his past traumas and demons. But after meeting Mi-Jeong, he starts to change slowly a bit. In the final episode, he even leaves his alcohol bottle behind.

As this happens, Mi-Jeong gets back to Mr. Gu. Even though the director didn’t show the couple to end with kissing and hugging, Mi-Jeong says, “I feel lovable, there is nothing I can feel right now but Love.” Even though it concludes with an open ending, it leaves us on a positive note that they might end up together loving each other.

Kim Ji-Won and Son Suk-Ku’s chemistry looked beautiful on-screen. The viewers loved the camaraderie among the Yeom siblings as well. While there was nothing out of the box in the drama, the simple storyline left a mark on everyone’s heart. There are a lot of people who didn’t like how the series ended. However, the makers wanted to keep it open to let the viewers assume the best for the characters.
