Is Netflix K-Drama The Glory Based on True Story?

The hit Netflix K-drama The Glory debuted on the streaming platform on December 30, 2022. Kim Eun-Sook served as the writer of the series, while highly acclaimed South Korean television director Ahn Gil-Ho directed it. Song Hye-Kyo and Lee Do-Hyun played the lead roles of Moon Dong-Eun and Joo Yeo-Jeong, respectively, in this absorbing revenge K-drama series. The series centered around the themes of extreme bullying and revenge.

The Glory is undoubtedly one of the top-rated K-dramas of all time. It received both critical acclamation and praise from the audience. Since its premiere, many fans have been quite curious to learn whether the series is based on a true story or not. Although bullying is a highly concerning real issue in the world, all the heart-wrenching events in the series are not based on any true story. They are a blend of fiction and fact.

Song Hye-Kyo’s The Glory: Is Netflix K-drama based on real events?

As per ScreenRant, the creator and writer of The Glory, Kim Eun-Sook, created the series based on two things, including the undeniable issue of bullying in South Korea and a significant conversation between her and her own daughter. As for school violence problems in South Korea, the prime evidence of this issue is that since 2007, the leading cause of death in the country has been suicide.

The writer also conducted extensive research on the problem before coming up with the storyline of The Glory. As reported by ScreenRant, the inhuman bullying scene of Dong-Eun in episode 1 is based on a real-life incident. The event took place in 2006 at a school for girls in Cheongju, Korea.

A girl in the ninth grade of the school became an unfortunate target of three other girls from the same school. They brutally tortured the victim for more than twenty days. The tortures included burning the girl with a curling wand. As per the report, the girl ended up in hospital due to her severe burn and other injuries, including a protruding tailbone. She was there for about six weeks. Thus, it is quite understandable that some parts of the Netflix series The Glory are adapted from real-life incidents.
