Is Sita Ramam Based on a True Story?

Sita Ramam was one of the most successful Telugu movies of 2022. Starring Dulquer Salmaan as Lieutenant Ram, the film was released in multiple languages, including Hindi, Tamil, and Malayalam. The romantic drama received primarily positive reviews, and its theme impressed the audience. While the film story has left fans spellbound, many wonder whether it is based on a true story.

Sita Ramam follows the story of a Pakistani student named Afreen (Rashmika Mandanna) who looks for Sita Mahalakshmi (Mrunal Thakur) to deliver a letter from her husband, Ram. This is followed by a flashback introducing Lieutenant Ram, an orphan who receives a mysterious letter from Sita during one of his missions. When he returns home, he finds Sita and the two fall in love with each other. However, their love story soon turns tragic when Ram has to go back on a mission.

Is Ram and Noor Jahan’s story real?

Ahead of the movie’s release in 2022, Hanu Raghavpudi revealed that Sita Ramam is a fictional story. However, he did seek inspiration from a real-life incident. During an interview with The Hindu, the director revealed that he found a book that featured an unopened inland letter. This is what inspired him to make the movie.

He said, “The letter I found in that book, in 2007, was from a mother to her son. I gathered that their family is from Vijayawada and the son is living in a hostel. She had enquired about his well-being and asked when he would be home.” The Sita Ramam director added, “It got me thinking, what if the contents of the letter had something crucial that could change the course of events?”

Reportedly, Rajkumar Kandamudi later introduced an army backdrop to the story. Dulquer Salmaan was soon locked in to play the lead role. Moreover, after several reconsiderations, Mrunal Thakur and Rashmika Mandanna were roped in for the roles of Sita and Afreen.
