Vidya Balan on Her Smoking Addiction: ‘I Don’t Think I Should Say This on Camera’

Bollywood actress Vidya Balan has been in the film industry for about two decades. She is known for picking up the most unique roles in movies. While she has received immense praise for her portrayal of complex characters, sometimes they leave a harsh impact on her personal life. The Do Aur Do Pyaar actress recently revealed how she was left with a habit of smoking after the 2011 film The Dirty Picture.

In 2011, Vidya Balan took the bold step to do The Dirty Picture, inspired by the life of Silk Smitha. The movie showcased the downfall of an actress after witnessing overnight success.

Vidya Balan recently appeared on the podcast show UNFILTERED by Samdish. During her appearance, she talked a lot about Indian cinema. At one point, the actress also highlighted her personal life and how it is affected by the characters she portrays in movies. Talking about The Dirty Picture, Balan opened up about her smoking addiction. She said, “I had smoked before shooting for the film. I knew how to smoke but I didn’t really smoke…you know what it is. But as a character, you can’t just fake it. I couldn’t have that hesitation because there is a certain perception about women who smoke. Much less now, far more before.”

Balan continued to reveal that she likes to smoke. Talking about how she likes to smoke, she said, “I don’t think I should say this on camera but I enjoy smoking. If you told me that there is no harm that a cigarette would do then I would have become a smoker. I love the smell of smoke. Even at bus stops in my college days, I would sit next to people who would smoke.”

She then revealed how she began smoking and said, “After The Dirty Picture, I got addicted. I would smoke 2-3 cigarettes a day.”

However, Vidya Balan confirmed that she does not smoke now.
