What did David witness on October 3?
Drishyam 2 begins with the night of October 3, 2014, the same night Sam Deshmukh was killed. The same night, a man named David Braganza flees the scene of a murder, seeking refuge at an under-construction site. There, he unwittingly witnesses Vijay Salgaonkar emerging from the shadows. Despite his attempt to escape with his family, David is eventually apprehended by the authorities.
Fast forward seven years, and Vijay and his wife Nandini and daughters Anju and Anu are living peacefully. Vijay, now a successful businessman who owns a movie theater and runs a cable company, harbors dreams of venturing into filmmaking. He collaborates with screenwriter Murad Ali to bring his vision to life. However, Anju grapples with PTSD and epilepsy stemming from the trauma of Sam’s death. Nandini always worries that the past events may come back to haunt their family. However, Nandini’s only solace is their neighbor Jenny, who suffers abuse from her alcoholic husband, Shiv.
What did Mahesh want from Vijay?
As the anniversary of Sam’s demise approaches, Vijay crosses paths with Mahesh Deshmukh, Sam’s father. Mahesh desperately asks Vijay to share the location of his son’s body to complete the funeral. However, Vijay dismisses him, saying he cannot give in to his demands. Meanwhile, Nandini confides in Jenny, unknowingly revealing Anju’s involvement in Sam’s death. Little does she know, Jenny and Shiv are undercover cops assigned by IG Tarun Ahlawat to uncover the truth, with Ahlawat’s predecessor, Meera Deshmukh, closely tied to the case.
Upon his release from jail, David struggles to rebuild his life and reunite with his estranged wife. However, hearing of Vijay’s ongoing case, he recollects Vijay’s presence at the construction site of the police station on that fateful night, leading him to suspect Vijay’s involvement in the murder. Moreover, David tips off Tarun, who, with the help of Meera and Mahesh, convinces David to reveal what he knows after a bribe. This revelation leads to the discovery of a skeleton at the newly constructed police station.
Why did police arrest Vijay Salgaonkar?
Vijay, observing this through his CCTV cameras installed around the station, appears to accept defeat. Tarun summons Vijay’s family for interrogation. While they maintain their alibi, Meera uncovers a recording of Nandini’s confession to Jenny, obtained through bugging their residence. Gaitonde brutally attacks Nandini and her daughters, triggering Anju’s epilepsy. Fearing for his family’s safety, Vijay falsely confesses to Tarun, hoping to protect them. With Vijay’s confession, the police close the case, arresting Vijay and putting him on trial for Sam’s murder.
However, Meera remains unsatisfied, demanding punishment for Vijay’s entire family. Meanwhile, Murad visits Tarun, Meera, and Mahesh, revealing that Vijay had concocted a script based on the murder, later turned into a novel titled “Drishyam,” albeit published under Murad’s name for copyright reasons. Vijay maintains his innocence, alleging that the police used the plot of “Drishyam” to frame him.
During the trial, the judge shocks everyone by revealing that DNA tests on the skeleton do not match Sam’s DNA. This revelation further proves Vijay’s innocence, and he is set free. Murad reveals Vijay’s intricate plan for an alternate climax in his film, where the protagonist, foreseeing potential complications, substitutes the villain’s remains with those of a deceased individual matching the villain’s profile. This involves befriending the cemetery gravedigger to obtain suitable remains and befriending the morgue security guard to facilitate the swap before DNA testing occurs.
Drishyam ending: What happened to Salgaonkar family?
Released on bail due to insufficient evidence, Vijay’s family is shielded from further police scrutiny by a court order. In a private meeting, the judge advises Tarun to cease all investigations, acknowledging the case’s complexities and the legal system’s limitations in delivering true justice. Meanwhile, Murad also reveals to Meera and Mahesh a crucial twist in Vijay’s film climax, where the protagonist gives the villain’s cremated remains to the grieving parents, offering them closure.
In reality, Vijay also does the same and delivers Sam’s ashes to his parents. Moved by Vijay’s gesture, Mahesh finds solace in immersing Sam’s ashes and urges Meera to let go of her resentment towards Vijay. Recognizing Vijay’s unwavering commitment to protecting his family, Mahesh extends forgiveness, fostering a sense of closure for both families. Observing from a distance, Vijay silently departs, fulfilling his duty to his loved ones.
