Is Ajay Devgn’s Maidaan Based on a True Story?

Ajay Devgn‘s upcoming movie, Maidaan, is a tale of challenges, sacrifices, and moments that created history. Amit Ravindernath Sharma directed the movie, and stars Priyamani, Rudranil Ghosh and Gajraj Rao. Boney Kapoor, Arunava Joy Sengupta, and Akash Chawla produced it.

The movie is presented by Zee Studios, Bayview Projects, in association with Fresh Lime Films. Maidaan is scheduled for a theatrical release around Eid in April 2024.

Maidaan: Inspired by football coach Syed Abdul Rahim’s life

The biographical sports drama Maidaan revolves around the life and journey of a legendary Indian football coach, Syed Abdul Rahim. Popularly known as Rahim Saab, he is the architect of modern Indian football. His tenure as a coach was considered the ‘golden age’ of football in India.

Under his guidance, the national football team learned new techniques and tactics and was popularised for their unique way of playing the sport. Moreover, their exceptional talent propelled them to victory, securing gold medals at the Asian Games, numerous titles at the Colombo Cup and more. They also played in the semi-finals of the Summer Olympics, making India the first-ever Asian country to reach this level.

Syed Abdul Rahim started his career as a school teacher but soon gained interest in football. He played his initial matches for the football team of Osmania University but soon shifted his focus back to teaching. However, when he realized that his heart belonged to football, he got a diploma in physical education.

He also represented the Qamar Club in local matches, and his team was considered one of the best teams in the local league. Moreover, he played for the Dutch Amateur League club HSV Hoek in the Nederlands and eventually landed a job as a football team manager.
