Chandu Champion is based on India’s first Paralympic gold medalist

As per reports, Chandu Champion is based on the life of India’s first Paralympic gold medalist Murlikant Petkar. In the movie, Kartik Aaryan will portray the role of Murlikant Petkar. The actor had been sharing behind-the-scenes footage of his training throughout the movie’s shooting. After wrapping up the shoot recently, Kartik Aaryan celebrated with director Kabir Khan and the team by eating a Rasmalai.

According to reports, Murlikant Petkar bagged an individual gold medal in the 1972 Summer Paralympics in Heidelberg, Germany. He also set a world record in the 50-metre freestyle swimming event at 37.33 seconds. In the same games, he also participated in javelin, precision javelin throw, and slalom, and was a finalist in all three events.

Murlikant Petkar has served in the Indian Army’s Corps of Electronics and Mechanical Engineers (EME) as a private or jawan with a craftsman rank. However, during the 1965 war against Pakistan, multiple gunshot wounds left him disabled. Originally a boxer at EME, Secunderabad, he switched to swimming and other sports after being crippled.

In addition to swimming, Murlikant Petkar has competed in sports like shotput, table tennis, slalom, and javelin throw. He even won the opening round of the 1968 Summer Paralympics in table tennis. At the Edinburgh, Scotland-hosted Third Commonwealth Paraplegic Games, he earned a silver medal in javelin throw and a bronze in shotput. In 2018, the government awarded him with the Padma Shri for his numerous accomplishments.
