Kyle MacLachlan: Twin Peaks is

The road to Twin Peaks was bumpy for a bit, as David Lynch publicly negotiated to get the revival the financial support needed. With the filmmaker back aboard to direct the scripts penned by Lynch and co-creator Mark Frost, the episode order has been expanded and production is set to get underway this fall. As Kyle MacLachlan does press for Pixar’s Inside Out, the returning star and series favorite has spoken briefly on the show’s resurrection and re-inhabiting Special Agent Dale Cooper.

“It’s going to be amazing,” MacLachlan tells Deadline. Though as one might expect, the actor couldn’t elaborate much on story (frustrating considering Coop’s last predicament), MacLachlan does talk his long-held hopes Peaks would return. “I’d always harbored, I guess, a fantasy that I might be able to revisit the character in some way–Dale Cooper. I so enjoyed him and he was such an interesting mix of…he’s just a complex person. I didn’t know what form that would take. I said ‘I hope it happens,’ but there was no real campaign on my part to try and get David to do anything.”

“But David and I are friends,” he adds. “So we would sometimes get together and have a cup of coffee and we’d reminisce and talk about stuff. I’d always say, ‘you ever think about it?’ Nothing much would come of it… So I was completely surprised when David said, ‘it looks like we’re going to return,’ and I was very excited for two reasons really. One is the character of Dale Cooper, which is a lot of fun and the world of Twin Peaks. Secondly, the chance to work with David again because we haven’t worked together as actor/director for 25 years roughly. So it’s been a while. I missed that relationship very much.”

MacLachlan confirms production on Twin Peaks will commence this fall. Joining him in the series is Dana Ashbrook, Sheryl Lee and Sherilyn Fenn, who led a lot of the fan support charge in recent months. Composer Angelo Badalamenti also returns for the expected 18 episodes. Also expected this year is a novel from Frost detailing the happenings of Twin Peaks in the years between the second season finale and its impending return.
