Maniacal Full Moon flick hits Blu-ray.
This writer counts legendary B-movie mogul Charles Band as both a friend and a colleague, editing as I do the Band published horror film magazine DELIRIUM. That said, I’m not exactly over the, um, moon about all of his output (I’m much more partial to his early 80’s Empire Pictures product, tell truth!). That said, there’s no arguing that Band’s most beloved cinematic stamp is his seemingly never-ending PUPPET MASTER series (a new film, the 11th is being planned as we speak) and, though some entries are stronger than others, there’s no denying PUPPET MASTER 4 (aka PUPPET MASTER 4: THE DEMON) is a prime slice of dark fantasy entertainment and, in my opinion anyway, the best entry in the franchise thus far.
The film, which pits the charismatic and lethal marionettes owned by the mystical Andre Toulon against a pack of demon (or Totems) from the underworld, benefits greatly from the scrappy directorial chops of the great Jeff Burr (FROM A WHISPER TO A SCREAM, LEATHERFACE: THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE 3) and the late David Allen’s top-drawer stop-motion effects.
Now, Full Moon have just announced that they will be releasing Burr’s fun and thoroughly bizarre PUPPET MASTER 4 on HD Blu-ray, complete with a Burr commentary, a vintage “VideoZone” behind the scenes doc, trailers and more.
Here’s the official PM4 synopsis:
Toulon’s Puppets for once, are about to do something good. As the bad puppets turn good!. The mini-menaces Blade, Tunneler, and Pinhead go toe-to-toe with their most menacing enemy yet-a team of terrifying, gremlin-like creatures known as “Totems” that are sent by the evil Egyptian demon Sutekh to recapture the magic stolen by Toulon. The demons target a young scientist, Rick who is now in possession of the Puppet Master secrets. As the creatures attempt to terminate his research and regain the “secret of life”, they leave a deadly path of destruction until the evil Totems finally find Toulon’s puppets in their way. However, Rick has a secret weapon on his side and the newest head-swapping puppet…Decapitron!
