The Grudge Holds

Last year, director Ochiai Masayuki helmed the seventh installment in ongoing Japanese horror series Ju-on (aka The Grudge) making it the tenth Grudge-related film overall. It was produced incredibly fast—production was announced in March for a June release—and went on to play Montreal’s Fantasia Film Festival in July. Unfortunately, little word on the film appeared and seemingly no U.S. distribution was secured; a bummer as before long, we’ll be two films behind. Masayuki has since directed Ju-on: The Final, the apparent big finale to the series as a whole. See the trailer, keeping the croak and creep alive, below.

Ju-on: The Final apparently continues the tale told in Beginning of the End. That film saw an elementary school teacher named Yui visit the home of a boy named Toshio Saeki who’s been absent from school for a long period of time. When she arrives, she re-lives the horrific tragedy which occurred in the Saeki household 10 years earlier. A cardboard box left in a closet holds the key to revealing a long-hidden truth. In The Final, Yui’s sister Mai Ikuno (Airi Taira) discovers that her younger sibling has disappeared. Yui is as an elementary school teacher, and she frequently visited the home Toshio Saeki (Kai Kobayashi), a truant student. Looking for clues to the whereabouts of her sister, Mai goes to the Saeki house. But weird and puzzling things begins to occur around Mai from the day she set foot in that house…

Apparenly, The Beginning of the End was a reboot, using the Saeki curse and house of Ju-on: The Grudge, but altering its history/continuity. Either way, all of the hallmarks are present in this latest trailer for Ju-on: The Final. Hopefully both it and its predecessor make their way stateside soon.

Last year, it was reported the U.S. The Grudge series would receive its own reboot with Midnight Meat Train’s Jeff Buhler penning the script. There’s been little news since. [Twitch]
