Trailer: Adam Driver in Paranoid Family Terror, Hungry Hearts

A curious film that appeared at both last fall’s Toronto International Film Festival and last month’s Tribeca Film Festival is director Saverio Costanzo’s paranoid psychological drama, Hungry Hearts. Seemingly skirting the edges of horror and decidedly non-supernatural, Hungry Hearts looks in line with claustrophobic, descent-into-madness Polanski vibes, a film about an increasingly reclusive family (Star Wars and Girls’ Adam Driver and I Am Love‘s Alba Rohrwacher) and the danger that poses to their newborn. 

Hungry Hearts concerns New York City newlyweds Jude (Driver) and Mina (Rohrwacher), who have a seemingly perfect relationship. But things take an unsettling turn with the birth of their son. Convinced that the baby must be kept free of all contaminants, Mina develops fanatical obsessions with veganism, cleanliness, and purity that may kill the child unless Jude can stop her.

Will Hungry Hearts hold parallel with anti-vaxxers, and those who disregard medical science in favor of their own parental instinct? Either way, it looks massively unsettling in its depiction of shutting out the world. 

IFC releases Hungry Hearts in theaters and on demand June 5th. The film shares the spooky summer weekend with Insidious: Chapter 3 and Ted Geoghegan’s acclaimed fest film We Are Still Here. Hungry Hearts co-star Rohrwacher will also be seen in the upcoming Cannes entry, Tale of Tales, which boasts a must-see trailer.
