Scream Trailer: ‘You Can’t Do a Slasher Movie as a TV Series’

The official trailer for Scream The TV Series is here and we have to ask what distinguishes it as Scream other than the immediately meta/knowing quote: “You can’t do a slasher movie as a TV series?”

Premiering June 30th on MTV, Scream The TV Series finds a YouTube video going viral, which soon leads to problems for the teenagers of Lakewood and serves as the catalyst for a murder that opens up a window to the town’s troubled past. “After a cyber-bullying incident results in a brutal murder, the shocking violence stirs up memories of a  killing spree from the past that has haunted some, intrigued others and maybe just inspired a new killer. A group of teens – with two old friends struggling to reconnect at its heart – become lovers, enemies, suspects, targets and victims of a killer who’s out for blood.” Lakewood isn’t Woodsboro, so is this simply a remake of the entire property, with Bella Thorne’s buzzed about “recreation” of the Scream opening (glimpsed here with the hot tub head throw) the starting point? Outside of that similarity and the aforementioned quote this largely looks like.. well, an MTV series with a slasher.

Except…The “mask.” There’s been much to discuss on the so-called fleshy mask, one that seemed to tease we’d see a skin-like version of the now iconic GhostFace visage. In the trailer, we get two flashes, one of the mask itself and another of an old photograph with a man’s face disfigured into resembling the GhostFace. Find both still images, below.

Scream stars Bex Taylor-Klaus, Willa Fitzgerald, John Karna, Connor Weil and Amadeus Serafini. Jamie Travis directs the pilot.
