Drafthouse Films Takes Kusama’s Thriller, The Invitation

Following its strongly-received SXSW World Premiere, Karyn Kusama’s terrific, somber thriller The Invitation will see release through Drafthouse Films.

The distributor, which currently has the great monster romance Spring in release, has acquired worldwide rights to The Invitation, The Wrap reports. In the moody thriller, a man (Logan Marshall-Green) returns to his old home for a dinner party hosted by his once-missing ex-wife and her new husband. Throughout the evening, he becomes increasingly worried a cult-like agenda is at play.

“‘The Invitation’ has remained under our skin since we first saw it and we’re honored that we’ll be able to share with audiences everywhere,” said Drafthouse COO James Emanuel Shapiro. “Karyn, Phil and Matt have crafted one of the best mysteries we’ve ever seen.”

Written by Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi, The Invitation is director Karyn Kusama’s first feature since the biting, pop horror-comedy Jennifer’s Body in 2009. The film is something special, a weighty piece of work that really boils over. For more, see my review and interview with Kusama.
