Trailer: Joel Edgerton’s Blumhouse Psychothriller, The Gift

Actor Joel Edgerton is making his feature directorial debut this summer with Blumhouse psychothriller, The Gift, a film about deeply held grudges from old friends.

Edgerton and his goatee star in the film as Gordo, a guy who reconnects with high school buddy Simon and seemingly just can’t take a social hint. Unfortunately, Gordo’s awkward omnipresence is part of a larger scheme for revenge.

Edgerton previously crafted short films The List and Monkeys, and co-wrote swell neo-noir The Square with brother Nash Edgerton (who directed). It seems like he’s making a strong debut here. I especially like the trailer’s way of making Rebecca Hall asking, “What does bygones be bygones mean?” feel like a philosophical question. Find the full trailer and synopsis below. STX releases The Gift this summer on July 31.

“Can you really go through life having never wronged anyone? Even if you are unaware of how, or when, and even who you may have wronged….chances are there is someone out there who won’t ever forget it…or you.

Simon (Jason Bateman) and Robyn (Rebecca Hall) are a young married couple whose life is going just as planned until a chance encounter with an acquaintance from Simon’s high school sends their world into a harrowing tailspin. Simon doesn’t recognize Gordo (Joel Edgerton) at first, but after a seemingly coincidental series of encounters proves troubling, a horrifying secret from their past is uncovered after nearly 20 years. As Robyn learns the unsettling truth about what happened between Simon and Gordo, she starts to question: how well do we really know the people closest to us, and are past bygones ever really bygones?”
