Full Trailer, Date: Ryan Gosling’s Feature Debut, Lost River

Said to be heavily influenced by his collaborators and heroes—the likes of Refn, Lynch and Jodorowsky—Lost River’s colorful, dreamy first trailer lays Ryan Gosling’s intent bare.

Heavy neon, dreamy slow-mo, a particularly Mulholland Dr.-esque performance shot and a glimpse of Barbara Steele(!) populate this official trailer for Lost River. The film stars Iain De Casestecker, Christina Hendricks, Saoirse Ronan, Matt Smith, Eva Mendes and Steele in “a dark fairy tale about love, family and the fight for survival in the face of danger. In the virtually abandoned city of Lost River, Billy (Hendricks), a single mother of two, is led into a macabre underworld in her quest to save her childhood home and hold her family together. Her teenage son Bones (De Casestecker) discovers a mystery about the origins of Lost River that triggers his curiosity and sets into motion an unexpected journey that will test his limits and the limits of those he loves.”

Warner Bros. has given Lost River an April 10th release in theaters and on VOD. Prior to such, it’ll make its North American Premiere at Austin’s SXSW. “I am excited that Lost River is being released by Warner Bros. and having its North American premiere at SXSW,” said Gosling. ”It’s a small specialty film, so for me, this day-and-date theatrical and digital release plan provides the best of both worlds. It allows those who are interested in seeing my film in a theatre to do so without excluding the majority of people who don’t have access to a specialty cinema. VOD is giving a new life to independent cinema and I’m very excited to have the opportunity to showcase the wonderful work of my cast and crew on such a broad platform.”  We’ll see if Gosling’s cinematic inspiration can gel into something unique. The sheer attractiveness of the images below have me hoping so.
