The Babadook really is one of those films that deserves to come out around Halloween. It’s a great atmosphere piece. Alas, the film is hitting the U.S. this November from IFC Midnight. UK readers, however, will see it land in their neck of the woods this October and a new preview – the “storybook scene” – is on the web; I think it really encapsulates the film’s mood.
The film is written and directed by Jennifer Kent. Put this on your “to see” list.
Six years after the death of her husband, Amelia struggles to discipline her out of control 6-year-old Samuel a son she finds difficult to love. Samuels dreams are plagued by a monster he believes is coming to kill tem both. When a disturbing storybook called The Babadook turns up at their house, Samuel is convinced that the Babdook is the creature hes been dreaming about. And when Amelia begins to see glimpses of the creature herself, it slowly dawns on her that the thing Samuel has been warning her about may well be real.
