We get a lot of back story on The Tall Man throughout the four Phantasm films; perhaps more so than with any other killer on this list.
The Tall Man is a grave robber who decimates the population of small towns, shrinks the dead down to half their natural size and employs them as slaves in another dimension. The Tall Man was once a seemingly ordinary guy who made an incredible discovery about parallel dimensions. That he used his discovery for sinister purposes puts him in the evil genius category, more so than the maniacal killer category. Interestingly, The Tall Man is actually not as tall as he looks on screen.
Angus Scrimm, who portrays The Tall Man in the Phantasm films, was put in suits that were several sizes too small, by the wardrobe department, to give him the appearance of being taller than he actually is.
