Swimfan
By Paul Doro

Boogeyman. When a Stranger Calls. Prom Night. The Stepfather. The Roommate. Some remakes, some heavily borrowing elements from other films (Single White Female), all released by Screen Gems, and all rated PG-13 (just like Swimfan). Also like Swimfan, not a single one is a halfway decent movie. But they are cheap to make and some have done quite well at the box office.
Screen Gems isnt the only studio that has released PG-13 thrillers, and Swimfan certainly wasnt the first PG-13 thriller. But it serves as a template for the aforementioned movies that followed it. Young and attractive stars, by-the-numbers storytelling, few if any genuine scares; it comes close to showing skin and blood without showing much of either.
So while 2002 saw the release of many far better genre films, for better or worse few were as influential as Swimfan.
