EXCL: Director & Cast Talk to Us About The Possession

Natasha Calis: Emily is a typical 11 year old girl who unfortunately becomes possessed. She’s very close to her family, which is one of the similarities that we have. She puts her family first.

Shock: Did you do any kind of research to prepare for the part?

Calis: I read the script. It is based on a true story. So, I did some research online. As far as research specific to the role, I asked the director if he wanted me to do anything, and he told me that he just wanted it to be real and raw. So, I didn’t do any research specific to my role.

Shock: Would you categorize The Possession as more of a supernatural thriller of a straight horror film?

Calis: It’s really hard to say. It has an amazing story. It’s not just a horror film or just a thriller. It’s a terrifying film, but it’s wasn’t made for the sole purpose of frightening the audience. So, it’s kind of hard for me to put it in to one genre.

Shock: How was your experience working with Ole as a director?

Calis: It was phenomenal. He helped me a lot. He would pull me aside before each scene and prepare me for what was about to come. He would always keep the crew quiet for about three minutes before each scene to let me prepare, emotionally. He is an amazing director and an amazing person.

Shock: What attracted you to the role?

Calis: The concept of me getting to be possessed was awesome! As soon as I read the script, something clicked. I started building and creating the character. I thought the concept was incredible. It was a great way for me to discover myself as an actor.

Shock: What was the production process like for you?

Calis: For the most part, it was very smooth. There were a few crazy and indescribable things that happened. There were light bulbs that would burst when someone would walk under them. There was a whole prop warehouse that burned down about a week after we finished filming. Nobody knows what caused the fire. The police were unable to figure it out. It was a great overall experience, though!

Shock: Did you get to do any outrageous effects for the possession scenes?

Calis: We did lots of cool makeup to make me look scary. They didn’t do a lot of prosthetics. They also had some special effects that were added in during post.

Shock:  Did you get to spend any time on set with Sam Raimi?

Calis: Sam, unfortunately, couldn’t make it to the set. I did get to meet him once. He is an amazing guy and so talented. He is phenomenal at what he does. I hope I get the chance to work with him again.

Shock: What’s up next for you?

Calis: I’ve been auditioning and I’m waiting to hear back about a few things. In the meantime, I want to go back to normal school, hang out with my friends, play soccer, and just be a kid again.
