Underworld Awakening on Top of the Box Office

The Underworld franchise is never going to die.  This weekend’s box office has proven that.  The combination of “Underworld” with the return of Kate Beckinsale, as the lethal Selene, scored big with audiences as the film hit the number one spot this weekend.

Underworld Awakening opened to $25 million, besting the George Lucas produced Red Tails which came in at number two.

As far as opening weekend performance goes, Awakening had the second highest opening.  It fell just one million short of Underworld Evolution, which opened to $26 million in January six years ago.  Rise of the Lycans, also a January release (in 2009), opened with $20.  The original Underworld – then an untested franchise – opened with $21 million in 2003.

Clearly the fans wanted Beckinsale back!

The Devil Inside, meanwhile, lost its footing in the box office top 10 and dropped to 15 in its third week.  The domestic total gross for that thriller is now an estimated $51.1 million.
