Exclusive: Greg Nicotero Talks Evil Dead, Maniac Remakes

KNB EFX is about to spill some blood

There’s no rest for the wicked when it comes to Greg Nicotero and KNB EFX.

Nicotero just wrapped the second season of The Walking Dead (the last episode is in the can, so to speak) which found him stepping behind the camera to direct an episode. His counterpart Howard Berger, meanwhile, is in Detroit, Michigan working with Sam Raimi on Oz: The Great and Powerful.

So, what’s next? It might be The Evil Dead which is expected to shoot soon under the direction of Fede Alvarez (working from a script polished by Diablo Cody).

Nicotero told Shock he hasn’t read the script yet, however, “We would love to do [that project]. I believe they might be shooting in New Zealand, so that might be prohibitive. I know they would love to have us and I know we’d love to do it, I just don’t know where it’s going to go. I spoke to [producer] Rob [Tapert] and said, with the stuff we’re doing on The Walking Dead, I can only imagine how cool it would be to do something with the make-up would be so much fun.”

He confirmed KNB is indeed working on the Alex Aja-produced remake of Maniac, directed by Franck Khalfoun and starring Elijah Wood. Shooting begins in L.A. on Saturday. He would not go into detail in regards to how graphic this film’s kills will be, instead he hailed the FX work done by Tom Savini in the original.

“Savini was the star of Maniac,” he said. “People remember that movie for the exploding head and that fantastic dummy at the end. We’re talking about the golden age of make-up FX when people didn’t care what the movie was about. They would go because Tom Savini’s name was on it. I was one of those guys. I saw Friday the 13th, The Burning and Maniac because of Tom. And that movie is also great for Joe Spinnell and it makes you feel uncomfortable. But [this remake] is in great hands, that’s all I can say.”

We’ll have the rest of our chat with Nicotero on this week’s Shock Waves podcast as he reflects on The Evil Dead II and the recent Blu-ray release.
