Early word on a new thriller in the works
I love Rec 2. Throwing a team of heavily-armed men, led by a priest, into a building of possessed tenants and mixing science with the supernatural was refreshing, cool, and thanks to the handheld camera style, intense.
We just got wind of a new American film in pre-production called Asylum and, damn, this synopsis sounds like it was heavily inspired by Rec 2. It is not confirmed yet, but I think this might be another After Dark Films project that will be developed under the After Dark Originals banner.
Here’s the plot crunch: A 12-man SWAT team responds to a hostage situation at the remote Rolling River Mental Hospital, where criminally insane residents have rioted and taken over.
Both lieutenant Sharp (who heads the mission) and former Rolling River patient Officer McGahey have had previous unpleasant encounters with the riot’s mastermind, Doctor Mortenson Sharp. This good doctor once tried to persuade McGahey to kill himself when he was a patient.
In the asylum, inmates seem to be under the influence of a demonic possession that makes them deadly and difficult to kill – the direct result of Mortenson’s efforts to open a portal to hell. Surprised, outnumbered and out of their element, the SWAT team must combine religious resources as well as military hardware if they have any hope of surviving the demons and closing the gates to hell.
So, you’ve got a SWAT team, possessed patients and religion. I wonder if the hand-held style will be called upon here as well…
More updates on this title as they come in!
