First Casting For The Thing Prequel

Winstead, Edgerton officially on board

It looks like The Thing prequel is finally happening.

The Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision Blog announced Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Joel Edgerton as the first two cast members of the follow-up to John Carpenter’s landmark 1982 creature-feature.

Winstead (who’s appeared in genre pics Black Xmas, Final Destination 3 and Death Proof) will play a Ph.D. candidate who joins a Norwegian research team in Antarctica after it discovers an alien ship in the ice. When a trapped organism is freed and begins a series of attacks, she is forced to team with a blue-collar mercenary helicopter pilot (Edgerton) to stop the rampage.

Matthijs Van Heijningen is directing from a script by Ronald D. Moore and Eric Heisserer. Strike Entertainment’s Marc Abraham and Eric Newman are producing.

Carpenter’s version of The Thing was in fact a remake of Howard Hawks 1951’s film The Thing From Another World, which was inspired by the 1938 short story, “Who Goes There?”

Shooting begins March 15th in Toronto.
