Screamers 2, The Gate Remake on the Way?!

Latter to be a 3-D feature

A moment of honesty. When I attended college in New York City, I had this professor who would get free laser discs (yes, those archaic things) and sell ’em off to us broke-ass students. I bought Screamers off him for 10 bucks. Why not? I thought it was entertaining enough. You’ve got Peter Weller doing his straight-faced schtick, Jennifer Rubin and robots with pointy objects killing shit.

Twelve year’s later – okay, so it doesn’t hold up. But I give writer Dan O’Bannon credit for tackling Phillip K. Dick’s source material. Can you believe someone’s going to do a sequel? According to Moviehole, shooting begins next month with Sheldon Wilson (Kaw) directing. Here is the site’s plot breakdown:

Screamers 2 fixes on a group of humans from earth, including Lt. Victoria Bronte, who arrive on Sirius 6-B to investigate an SOS signal sent out from the planet, which has been supposedly deserted since the destruction of the man-made weapons known as “screamers.”

Once the squad arrives, they find a group of human survivors eking out an existence in an old military outpost, but more important, they discover that the threat of the screamers has become even more insidious, now that they’re able to morph into human form.

Casting is now underway!

In equally bizarre news, Joblo is reporting WETA’s Randall William Cook is eyeing to direct a remake of 1987’s The Gate. Furthermore, the FX vet – whose credits include King Kong and the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy – will do so in 3-D! In the original, a young Stephen Dorff and his pals deal with a demonic menace when a hole is discovered beneath an uprooted tree. You’ve got dead dogs, records playing backwards and a pretty mean tone running through the story.

No other details were revealed, so we’ll see if this one comes to fruition.
