Resident Evil Breeds Box Office Victory

Sequel scares up $24 million

Screen Gems and Russell Mulcahy’s Resident Evil: Extinction – once again penned by Paul W.S. Anderson and starring Milla Jovovich – bested its box office competition this weekend coming in at number one and scoring a sweet $24 million. The latest chapter surpassed its predecessor’s opening weekend gross by roughly $1 million (Resident Evil: Apocalypse opened in ’04 to $23.3 million) making it the most successful bow for the franchise yet. The first Resident Evil debuted at $17 million and went on to gross $40 million.

Meanwhile, Freestyle’s Dragon Wars clung onto the top 10 (ranking at number 10) adding $2.5 million to its take. The eye candy fantasy-actioner has grossed $8.4 million to date. This weekend also bid adieu to Rob Zombie’s Halloween which placed at 12th. The re-imagining exited the top ten with a handsome $54 million. Not bad…
