It reveals the the extensive travel, difficult terrain, and logistical challenges faced by the cast and crew throughout the shoot. The featurette also includes new comments from Nolan and several members of the cast.

Christopher Nolan really made his cast go on an Odyssey

A new behind-the-scenes featurette for The Odyssey sheds light on the extraordinary conditions under which Christopher Nolan and his team filmed the upcoming epic. Filmed across multiple locations throughout the Mediterranean, the epic required the cast and crew to work in remote regions.

Nolan said, “The Odyssey is a massive story and that’s a really exciting challenge to take on.” The production moved between countries throughout filming, with each destination presenting its own set of obstacles.

Matt Damon, who plays Odysseus, described the project as “the biggest movie I’ve ever done in my career.” The actor added, “I feel like we’ve made six or seven movies and in a sense we did – every single chapter of this adventure was in a different location that posed a different challenge.”

The featurette also highlights the practical realities of filming in such isolated areas. It showcases crew members carrying equipment through rugged terrain and constructing production facilities in these locations.

Tom Holland said, “I think what’s so special about Chris’s movies is that he goes the extra distance to make it feel authentic for us on set, which then makes it feel more authentic for the audience in the theater.”

Meanwhile, Zendaya added, “As an actress it is such a luxury to be in such an immersive space.” In the clip, Robert Pattinson also joked that reaching the set often required lengthy hikes through difficult terrain while already dressed in costume.

“There’s a reason we call these things odysseys. This is ‘The Odyssey’ and it really is a journey through all of these incredible places and is hopefully something that really profoundly entertains and moves people,” Damon concluded.

The Odyssey is scheduled to arrive in theaters on July 17, 2026.
