On Bridgerton: The Official Podcast, the director Tom Verica and the host Alison Hammond have joked about possible suspects, while fans share their own theories. Verica said that the Crabtrees could be behind it, while Hammond guessed that Penelope may have faked her retirement to stay anonymous.
Showrunner Jess Brownell explained that this twist does not come from Julia Quinn’s original books, which gives the series room to surprise fans with the new mysterious writer. The drama started when Penelope Bridgerton decides to retire from writing her famous gossip column.
