General Hospital star Cameron Mathison opens up about Drew Cain’s dark storyline and why he understands Willow’s revenge.
Cameron Mathison talks about the dynamic between Drew and Willow on General Hospital
On General Hospital, Drew Cain’s wife, Willow Tait, played by Katelyn MacMullen, drugs him and leaves him paralyzed, able to blink but not speak. During his appearance on Good Morning America, Cameron Mathison talked about how playing such a dark role feels exciting, but he noted that Drew is no hero.
The Drew actor stated, “He’s just not a good human. I’ve never really played a character like this in 30 years of [acting in daytime TV]. And it’s been really fun, but at the same time, it’s bizarre being hated so much in America and in the canvas. It’s been wild!”
Mathison joked about a recent scene that focused only on him blinking. “I love that we got a clip of just me blinking. You’re welcome, America.” He also shared how fans react to Drew’s behavior. Some fans have thrown apples at him in stores or lightly hit him with magazines. He finds it shocking but understands that it means people are invested in the story.
Mathison agreed that Drew is facing the consequences of his own actions. He believes Willow’s anger comes from Drew’s bad behavior. “I think, really, you can blame Drew for most of that, to be honest … She’s only reacting to a whole bunch of horrible, horrible things that my character’s done to her,” he stated.
Further, when asked about Drew’s “worst” moment, the actor talked about manipulating young Wiley into thinking his father did not love him.
“He manipulated an 11-year-old kid into thinking that his father didn’t love him anymore just to get something that he wanted like, he had a selfish motivation. When I read that, I went to the producer. I was like, ‘Can we tweak this a little bit? This is too much.'”
“As a dad, like, it was horrible. The kid’s devastated, and [as Drew] I’m like, ‘Get over it.’ It was pretty low, pretty dark.” The actor was asked if he could advise Drew, Mathison said, “Stop taking yourself so seriously. Stop being so selfish. Just be kind and stay away from Willow, who keeps trying to shoot you and stab you and things like that.”
For now, he enjoys playing a villain. The role lets him explore a new side of himself, and he is ready for whatever drama comes next in Port Charles.
