Young & Restless’ Mariah Actress on What’s Next After Dominic’s Kidnapping

In a shocking turn of events on The Young and the Restless, Mariah Copeland recently kidnapped Dominic, the kid she carried as a surrogate for Abby and Devon. Now, actress Camryn Grimes, who plays Mariah on the show, has given a taste of what her character has in store.

Speaking with Soap Opera Digest, Grimes has given an insight into her character, Mariah’s alarming decision to kidnap Dominic. The actress called Mariah’s recent actions “an act of desperation.” Grimes explained that her character “doesn’t see any other way out, as much as she tries to argue with herself.”

Grimes added, “This pervasive and intrusive thought is winning, in the form of Ian. She’s isolated herself. She hasn’t been helped in the way that she needs to be helped, and she’s out on a line. This is the only answer that she can conceive of to bring her any sort of peace or happiness.”

Grimes believes that in Mariah’s mind, kidnapping Dominic is the only way to live happily ever after somewhere far. “That’s her reality,” Grimes states.  “That’s as not complicated as it gets, but it, in fact, is deeply, deeply complicated and wrong. It’s just wrong. But to her, that’s not a plane that she’s operating on, right? Not all the cylinders are firing. Let’s be very, very clear.”

According to Grimes, Mariah probably doesn’t realize that her actions are dangerous and could land her in trouble. “There’s a severe detachment there,” says the actress. “She’s not only detached herself physically, she’s detached herself mentally. And not because she wants to.”

The soap opera star added, “This is something that happened to her, and it sent her in this spiral. She’s making things extremely black and white, and not really, in the moment, understanding the ramifications of what this means. And if she does try to argue with herself about the cost of these decisions, she’s not winning. Her better self is not winning out.”
