Here’s a recap of what happens in The War Between the Land and the Sea’s premiere episode.
Episode 1, “Homo Aqua,” opens with fishermen discovering a strange aquatic creature stuck in their nets. This sudden encounter pushes the fishermen into a panic, who end up shooting the creature. Meanwhile, Barclay Pierre-Dupont, an ordinary transport worker, is unexpectedly reassigned to assist the investigation. He joins Sergeant Hana Chakri and General Austin Pierce on a mission to Cala Escondida, the site connected to the initial discovery.
Upon arrival, the team examines the recovered body, which they name Homo Aqua. They discover a naturally occurring pearl placed in the being’s throat, hinting at signs of cultural significance. They theorize that these creatures have surfaced because of an underwater earthquake that happened years ago. The team soon receives a call about a mysterious attack. A woman was dragged into the water, hinting at the creatures being close. When no one is around, Barclay draws a cross and wishes for the creature.
To prevent any further attacks, General Austin Pierce orders the team to send a message. The Homo Aqua responds, which the team translates using advanced technology. The creature accuses the humans of killing one of theirs first. While they are working on making a truce, reports arrive of similar creatures surfacing worldwide. Preparations then begin for an official meeting at Imperial House. They create a special pathway to let Homo Aqua into the building.
During the gathering, multiple Homo Aqua arrive, including one named Salt, who talks to the humans in a common language. She presents the bodies of her deceased children, who are the victims of damage caused by human pollution. She then dismisses the human-chosen spokesperson and chooses Barclay specifically to be the ambassador for humans, since he had prayed for the creature earlier.
The War Between the Land and the Sea was created by Russell T Davies. It features Russell Tovey, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Jemma Redgrave, and Colin McFarlane, among others. The show aired on December 7, 2025, with two episodes on BBC One.
