Melissa Claire Egan, as Chelsea Lawson in The Young and the Restless, has been a schemer and troublemaker for over a decade. However, she has now become one of the most-watched and debated figures on the show. Egan explained the reason for the same. She feels that the character has multiple aspects to her personality that hook fans to her.
Melissa Claire Egan explains what makes Chelsea ‘so interesting’ on The Young and the Restless
According to Melissa Claire Egan, Chelsea Lawson was initially portrayed as a “pretty awful” character on The Young and the Restless. However, the actress notes that Chelsea’s transformation from con artist to a more complex person stemmed from the right relationships. Her on-and-off romance with Adam Newman gave her role an emotional aspect.
She said, “One of the reasons she and Adam are drawn to each other is that they’re so similar. They both have a good side, and they both have a bad side. Unfortunately… too often, they bring out the worst in each other.” (via Soaps.com)
Egan says that the mix of light and shadow, along with her polarity, is what keeps viewers tuned in to her character. She explained, “What makes her so interesting is that she’s not all good, and she’s not all bad. You can do anything with a character like that. And of course, as an actor, it’s fun to play that.”
Melissa Claire Egan then added that Chelsea Lawson always wants to make the right choices for herself on The Young and the Restless. However, this becomes difficult when her impulses and past mistakes continually draw her back into trouble. The actress said, “At her core, she probably has a questionable moral compass. She wants to do the right thing and make good decisions, but… well, we’ve seen how that turns out.”
As for Egan, she claims playing a character with both a villainous side and a vulnerability is a gift. She has previously played a similar role on All My Children and is grateful when writers give her character a dark side.
