Charli XCX’s Response to ‘Boomer’ Critics Explained

Charli XCX recently performed at the Glastonbury music festival alongside other notable musicians on Saturday night. However, after her set had been broadcast live via the U.K.’s BBC iPlayer, many people flocked to social media to criticize the 32-year-old for using autotune and questioned her musical talent. The singer has since responded to the criticism. Recently, the Grammy Winner joined fellow musician Dua Lipa at London’s Wembley Stadium as part of the latter’s Radical Optimism tour. At the venue, the two performed XCX’s “360.”

Here’s how Charli XCX responded to negative reviews of her Glastonbury set.

What did Charli XCX say about criticism of Glastonbury set?

Charli XCX dismissed the negative reviews of her Glastonbury set via social media.

“Like the idea that singing with deliberate autotune makes you a fraud or that not having a traditional band suddenly means you must not be a ‘real artist’ is like, the most boring take ever,” the Brat artist wrote on X (Twitter). “Yawn sorry just fell asleep xx.”

Charli XCX’s post on X invited mixed reactions. Many defended and agreed with the pop artist, while some criticized her:

“Ignore them girl you know these fandoms hate another successful female pop star,” a fan wrote on X.

“they might not understand your artistry, but all of us angels do,” another fan added.

“Love you charli !! Every album you made is a masterpiece,” one fan posted.

“It does make you a fraud, sis,” another commenter wrote. “Nobody knows your real voice and now we know it’s awful because of the deliberate auto tune.”

“Fraud XCX,” another fan commented.

However, in a follow-up tweet, the singer admitted that she enjoyed the discussion about her music. She noted that the “best art” was “divisive and confrontational,” and that it evolved into “truly interesting culture,” instead of being simple and “sort of forgettable.”

She later posted another tweet, stating she enjoyed the “boomer vibe comments” on her Glastonbury performance, adding that it was “super fascinating.”

Charli XCX previously admitted that she uses autotune. In an appearance on the Tape Notes podcast, she admitted that she could “once sing in tune,” but has since switched to autotune as she became “lazy.”

“I never am not singing with Auto-Tune,” she added.
